For those of you that thought I wouldn't work on her
Blown head gasket into the lifter valley. Pistons look good.
Going to tear it down to check bearings, etc. _________________ Tim Team BFH |

Pull the pistons and get them shaved to lower the compression. Then order the kit....you know you want to! _________________ If it ain't broke, keep fixing it 'til it is! |

Well, beats the hell out of a holed piston!!! You will want to clean up the head and deck and then check for flatness to make sure the problem isn't anything more than high compression, the "missing" headbolt and what looks like stock type headgaskets. Since you should make a gasket upgrade, having the head and deck surfaces re-surfaced may well be necessary.
There is something I'm curious about. See the dark line below the stud that the arrow is pointing to. Is that oil, an optical illusion or a split in the gasket?

It is not split, optical illusion. The gaskets are Felpro 1017-1. They lasted three years. I am leaning towards Cometic gaskets. They are pricey!!!! _________________ Tim Team BFH |

| The MLS-type gaskets will in all likelyhood require resurfacing of deck and heads. They require a different finish than composite gaskets. Check with gasket manufacturer for recommendations. BTW, FelPro also sell a MLS headgasket. |

craig, if he re-surfaces the heads and deck, won't he also need to machine the intake so it will fit properly????? i've been through that twice, and both times the intake flanges and ends needed to be machined for the ports and holes to line up. bigger pita than getting things surfaced...
and, my block is not o-ringed, hasn't blown any head gaskets with >14-1.. but, each cylinder has 5 studs instead of 4 (and yes, it's a bowtie block with the extra fasteners added, which i'm sure morgan or another machine shop could do if the engine is torn down far enough to deck)... |

| Bob, It shouldn't be too big of a problem to just kiss the heads and block if they are still nice and flat. Just need to put the proper surface finish on. If there is any warpage or low spots, then its a different story, and the greater amount removed --might-- necessitate machining the intake. The machinist will know when he makes the cuts. |

| on Cometic Head Gaskets, I have had great results with their white Head Gasket on the last 3 markIV motors I have assembled for people, here again as long as everything is flat. 2 of the 3 had aluminum heads, 12.5 to 1 and the Square Port Cast Iron head motor was 11 to 1. SMac |

What amount you have taken off the heads and deck should also be removed from the intake. Most of the time all you have to do is remove material from where the intake meets the heads. Also make sure to check the push rods lenght as they mite be to long after milling everything. Glad to see you didnt hurt it to bad. How's it feel to be bitch slapped ? lol _________________ www.ExtremeMichiganBoats.com |

You can run the .050 Cometic marine gaskets, they use them on the poker run motors. Keeps things in place after milling. _________________ 1979 19ft. Southwind Tunnel Dragster
