AH64Doc,

I will post progress images.

Next step is to wait for the engine cradle (purchased on ebay) to arrive here at the office, assemble it, and take it down to the shop where it (engine) is stored now and load it in the cradle and place it in the back of my truck with their engine hoist (now I have to buy a hoist to take if off my truck).

Thanks TEAMGREEN,

I need to purchase those items for future work. I am looking at Harbor Freight for engine hoist and stand. Kragen would be my other choice (or Costco).

When I bought the boat, it also came with a 454 4 bolt main engine with a thrown piston (damage to one cylinder wall). It looks like it is repairable, it will be worked on and ready when the Spectra needs an engine replacement.

I have 2 cherry pickers from Harbor Freight--1 to hoist motors in and out, and a second one to help turn over the hulls. I think I paid about $135. for each--one about 5 years ago, and one last year-- and I've never had any problems with them. I just wish the boom was a foot longer to make it easier to reach to the middle of the Nordic.

You can never have enough Sangers--I've got a 1968 17'-10" flat that I am trying to restore this winter. I knew a guy with a wood deck very similar to yours back in the late 1960s, except it was blue--if I recall, it had a 392 hemi. At the time, it was the fastest lake boat around, and looked beautiful. You have a real classic there--a great boat.

Oh, two of the guys that worked for Sanger in the 60s have a shop here in Clovis (Fresno). The last time I was over there, they were just finishing up a new wood deck for a '68 sanger flat--pricey, but beautiful. If you have any questions, you might check with Manny and Vito at Fiberglass Unlimited. I know they they love those classic Sangers.

Sanger Pete,

I will try to pick the one with the longest boom.

I have wood working experience. Part of the mahogany is weathered, but it seem to be all there, just need to do research and test some restoration products similar to the ones listed on the link below:

http://mybldg.com/bondomahogany.html

Once I remove and re-install all of the stringers and raised floor, I will remove all of the peeling urethane to see how much work the veneer will need. The port and starboard side two piece laminate gunnels have separated and I will need to slowly bring them back together and then glue them with water proof glue (see below):

Polyurethane Glues - A long open time, one-part system, polyurethanes are simple and easy to use. It is ideal for laminations of pourous materials. Polyurethanes are water proof, but moistening the surface before adhering aids in curing.
Pros: cheaper than epoxies, easy to clean up, water resistant, one-part, easy to use
Cons: stains skin (gloves suggested), excess glue needs to chiseled out, more expensive than "Yellow Glues", requires moist substrates
Examples: Gorilla Glue, System Three Glue, Titebond HiPURformer

Thanks for the Sanger restoration contact in Fresno, I will contact them if I run into major problems.

Bob

Here is the period engine for the boat.

My research now will be to find out what type of engine mounts were used to attach it to the steel 1/4" angle rails connected to the stringers. These rails have welded on plates to receive the engine and drive shaft support hardware. The v-drive box was attached, past the steel rails, to the wood stringers.

The front engine mounting locations on the rails are off set to match the locations on the engine. There is another Sanger owner in Stockton that has a HEMI in his boat; hopefully, he will provide some images on his original engine installation.

Oldsquirt,

I telephoned Mr. Chuck Taylor regarding the Nicson exhaust manifolds (without exhaust risers) listed on his web site. He has two sets, one polished, I will be purchasing the unpolished set (should match the HEMI Hot Heads intake manifold). Thanks for the lead.

This is how my project might look like when finished.

I have been talking to the owner of the boat shown (Mr. Dave Giddings out of Sacramento) and he sent me this image to give me encouragement.

Here is the part for the HEMI that I purchased off of eBay.

The right hand side mounting holes have been drilled at an angle in an attempt to make a different year Nicson stringer mounting plate work. I will have to see if I can have it repaired or retired it.

Bob, looking good. Anything can be fixed, if you have enough patience and ingenuity. I am sure you will do fine.
